The Pacific Crest Trail Association issues permits for thru-hikers who are hiking more than 500 miles along the PCT. This single permit allows a thru-hiker to pass through each of the many national parks, national forests, wilderness areas, etc. along the entire PCT. Otherwise, a hundred different permits would be needed for each area passed through.
