Friday, July 24

The last 4 days since Darby has been pretty difficult. On par with the section from Benchmark to Helena. The elevation gain each day has easily been over 6000ft. One thing that makes the hiking more difficult than the PCT is the steepness of the grades. I think I talked about that before, but it is such a butt kicker. Some grades easily hit 30-45%. Sometimes you think you'll slide all the way to the bottom on the loose gravel if you slip.

Anyways, we are all pretty drained from this section. Motivation was super low to hike today. We took frequent long breaks and had to talk ourselves into moving again. The weather was nice, but I think that made it easier to stay seated.

I had good service to watch the end of today's Tour de France stage. It was a good one!

We saw an old man hiking with 2 llamas. The llamas carry all of his gear.

We walked on an old jeep trail for the entire day. We don't mind hiking on roads because it makes it easier to talk to each other. When we are on a singletrack trail we have to be single file and sometimes the first and last person can't hear each other. On roads we can bunch up or even hike 4 across.

I forgot to mention the other day that the divide is now the border of Montana and Idaho. So as we walk Montana is to our left, and Idaho is to our right. We weave back and forth in each state all day. It will be like this all the way to Wyoming.

We made most of the miles we planned on hiking. Only 1-2 miles short. But we only have about 12 miles of fairly easy trail to Bannock Pass where we are getting a ride into Leadore, Idaho. The motel owner will pick you up if you stay at his motel. That makes things easy.
