We saw our first moose on trail today!! I've been waiting forever to see one!

We came up to a nice creek to take a break. Heather, Andy, and I just crossed the creek and took our packs off. Leah was about to cross. I looked across the creek to a meadow with some high grass and saw the upper half of a cow moose and her calf heading Leah's direction. I don't even think they saw her or us. They got about 20 yards from Leah when they finally saw her and got spooked and ran off. It was awesome.

The trail today was both really fun and also really not fun.

It started out as really not fun, the trail was terribly overgrown and plants were scraping our legs the entire time.

But then we entered a really cool wooded area with super nice trail. There were also a ton of volcanic rocks everywhere.

We then entered another really nice area where we saw the moose. It was also a sheep experimental area. I believe they do tests on grazing.

Later in the day it got really hot. We had a water source listed on our phone app, but when we got to the GPS spot, it was completely dry. It was a good 8 miles further up trail to the next water source and it required a huge climb. We really needed to find water. The girls sat while Andy and I went all over the area to different drainages to find something. We eventually found a small trickle.

It was a reminder to not always trust any water source listed in our guides, because they could easily be dry.
