Saturday, August 8

Because of our permit, today was going to have to be a 29.5 mile day.

We decided to wake up early, when we did, it was raining....

We had no choice but to pack up the tents in the rain. It sucked. The tent weighed an extra 3 pounds while soaked and stuffed into the bag.

We got on trail around 6:30 and it rained nonstop until noon.

We crossed a creek that was runoff from a geyser field. The whole creek was steaming. When we tested the water, it was perfect jacuzzi temperature. We all stood in the creek in our shoes and warmed our feet. Our shoes were already soaked from the rain.

The only plus side to a rainy day is that you don't want to stop and take any breaks in the rain so you can make miles quickly. We had hiked about 17 miles by 1pm.

We had a brief period of sun so we stopped and laid out our gear to dry.

It didn't rain much the rest of the day. The only problem was that we had to ford about 5 rivers in the afternoon. Our shoes never got a chance to dry out. My wet socks were rubbing parts of my feet raw.

We saw our first grizzly prints since northern Montana. But no sightings.
