Sunday, August 23

Today was another cold morning in the Basin. We ended up having to do a bit of climbing from camp through rolling hills.

As we were on a climb, a dog appeared behind us. She seemed scared and was wondering. After a few minutes she warmed up to us and was eating and drinking out of our hands. She had a harness on with a rabies tag but no owner tag. We don't know where she would have come from. We did see a ranch very far off in the distance but it would have been a long trek for the dog to get where we were.

We started walking and it followed us. So we figured we'd take her to Rawlins with us. We aren't sure what breed she is, but she is a medium sized dog and looks like she would belong on a ranch. But the fact that she is wearing a harness makes is think she's not from a ranch.

We don't have service, so we can't call the number on the rabies tag. So, we now have a new member of the group.

She's a perfect hiking dog. Lightweight, but strong. Stays right with us the entire time. She hiked over 20 miles with us today.

Today the trail was similar to yesterday except with a good amount of climbing at the beginning.

We only had one nasty pond to drink out of today. One source was a nice flowing spring and the other was a pipe with a nozzle that spewed out ice cold water.

We ate dinner around 5:15 at the nice nozzled pipe. There were a ton of cows hanging around when we first walked up. They all scattered, but then got curious about us and began to gather and stare at us. One cow got brave and tried to get close to us while all the other cows watched. It was really funny. Once she got close, the others moved closer themselves.

We hiked until it was dark and set up camp.

I attached a picture of a pronghorn. We see then constantly out here. They are usually in herds and are super fast.
