25.5 miles

Today we had a very early start. The trail was very exposed and we wanted to get to a nice shady spot 18 miles in before we took our afternoon siesta at around noon. There was another road walk detour that we had to do as well. The detour was around a section of trail that was burned in the Station Fire a few years ago and the forest service closed the trail until it recovers. Since the trail was burned, the "poodle dog bush" grows thick and makes it difficult to pass.

The road walk wasn't too bad though, it was actually a nice change to the trail and it was easy walking. The road took us almost to the top of Mt. Gleason and we had some awesome views of the desert north where we will be heading in a few days.

After the road we had a few sections of both Poodle Dog bush and Poison Oak which was annoying. We made it to our planned siesta site around 11:45 and took a nice long nap there. By 2:15 we were heading the remaining miles down to a KOA campground for the night. The campground has a store so we were talking about what we were going to get the entire way. We got to the campground at 5:00 and started talking to some other hikers when we learned that the store closed at 5:00! We ran to the store, and the ladies who were running it were nice enough to open it back up for us so we could buy our ice cream and soda.

Samwise, Sweet As and I all got a pint of Ben and Jerry's and finished them within minutes. That's 1200 calories each!

The campground also had a pool and showers. It has been 12 days without a shower for me, so the pool and then a shower felt awesome.

  1. Hi Dan,

I would love to be able to eat a whole pint of Ben & Jerry's in one sitting!

  2. I'm pretty sure Dan could eat the whole pint in one sitting before he went on the trail too :)
